Time To Dig A Little Deeper

Alright, so I know I said I was going to take time off from my little blog but I have something on my mind that I thought I should share and hopefully gain some advice from you all. It’s a very simple yet oh so complicated topic. I.stress.easily. very easily. I don’t know why it happens this way but I have always been prone to stress. Even in high school— whether it was a fight with friends or a massive test, I would stress out. In college, it was the same thing. If I had more than two tests in a week, hello stress! For the most part, i would like to think I manage my stress pretty well. I make lists (thank you, mom) and organize things in order of priority. I make my life at least appear to be  simplistic and not-so-stressful. I don’t like to make other people around me feel stressed when I am freaking out internally because that is just not how I work. In my opinion, just because I am stressing out about something doesn’t necessarily mean that someone else is feeling the same way. Being stressed is never fun so bringing someone into that boat when it can be avoided, I say heck yes.

Lately, at work I have been gaining a lot of responsibility. Don’t get me wrong— this.is.fantastic. I have been wanting to take on more for awhile now and all i can think at this very moment is “be careful what you wish for” because it could not be more true. Without going into the entire situation for privacy and my own well-being, you just need to know that I am going to be swamped at work the next few weeks. Many people have asked if I am nervous. The honest answer, yes… how could I not be?! This is my first job in the “real world” and I am still learning (and will continue to for awhile) so yes, it is scary. However, I am so ready to take on the challenge. I feel prepared, to an extent, and I know I am capable. I am more worried about the unknown. You know what I am talking about right? I am organized so I have all my ducks in a row but what about the duck I don’t account for?! That duck scares the crap out me. Who knows when or where its coming from but have no fear, it will come. Something unexpected is expected. And THAT is what I need your help with. Does anyone have advice or some de-stressing routines or steps they like to take? I have the “drinking excessive amounts of wine” covered so that’s a non-issue. What else do you have?!

New Year, New Rule.

If you ask me New Years resolutions are designed for you to fail. I mean realistically, how many of you have actually kept a resolution going for longer than 3 months? Not me — that is for sure. I am just not one of those people that can stay committed to something for that long. I am a phase kind of gal. I go through phases like you wouldn’t believe. My mother can attest to this. Therefore, this year after twenty-two something years of making “resolutions” I have decided that a change (read: rule) is necessary. [Rule #1: This year I will make goals rather than resolutions.] Goals seem much more attainable. After all, I want something that can be accomplished and I will be proud to cross off my list come 2014.

I know I am little behind on posting my “resolutions” but whatever, sue me. Here are a few that I’ve been working on and wanted to share with you:

– find a hobby — I don’t know why this is so hard but it’s been on my mind for awhile. I want to find something I can become passionate about. I am currently borrowing my father’s DSLR camera to see if I want to dive back into photography.
– eat organic — whether I like to admit it or not, I am a health freak. Not so much that my life is consumed by it but being healthy and living well has always sparked an interest. I know eating organic is much better for my body so I figure, why not?
– buy classics, don’t just settle for spontaneous sale items — this is a no-brainer. Saving money and being practical about purchases could never hurt.
– teach the dog a new trick — he is turning 3 in April and I think it’s time he learn something new.
– make an educated decision about the blog— i can officially check off my first goal!! With yesterday marking the day I made a decision to get back into blogging.
– make 5 new friends — i know this may sound odd but I am finally getting settled and Dallas is starting to finally feel like home. However, I love meeting new people and think that it would be great to gain some new friends in Dallas. I’m looking forward to seeing this goal develop!
– volunteer — give back!
– cook a meal at least once a week— so far, so good. On Sunday the boyfriend and I made chili and tonight’s menu includes stuffed bell peppers!
– witness something truly amazing— i am hoping this happens before Summer 2013 but if it doesn’t, I know that come July (my big brother is getting married!) I will have witnessed something wonderful.

These are just a few of the goals I have been working on so far. I have a full page in the back of my new calendar dedicated to these bad boys and I cannot wait to start checking them off! Wish me luck! Does anyone have similar goals? Or different ones that they want to share?!

The Beginning…Again

I’ve been “ignoring” my blog— it’s not really ignoring when I think about it daily— for about 1.5-2 weeks now. I wish i could say I had an excuse (does getting the flu count?) but regardless, I’ve been denying my blog the attention it deserves. Lately, I just haven’t been motivated to write but with 2013 now in full effect, I realized that it is time I make an educated decision about Tasteful {ness}. I am going to try and make a commitment of blogging 3-4 times a week. I want to be able to post every day but I just don’t think I have the time or the material right now. So here is to a brand new start in 2013. Full of good food, lots of fun, and a bunch of tasteful things in the future!! Thanks for sticking around :)

A Holiday Size Hangover

What is the worst thing around the holidays? I know it’s hard to imagine anything about the holidays is bad but there are one, well two, things. 1. the large consumption of food which later creates the inevitable “food baby” and 2. the holiday size hangover. I don’t care who you are —  hangovers are the worst. If you happen to be one of those people that drink excessive amounts of alcohol and have never experienced a hangover: congrats…and how rude. There is literally nothing worse than waking up in the morning after spending time at a holiday party the night before and being miserable. The holiday season is supposed to be a time of happiness and merriness… which, in my opinion guarantees a glass of champagne. So what if a few cocktails happen to get thrown into the mix. Sue me. But the key is being able to get rid of the aftermath in a timely manner. Keyword: timely. I am not talking about laying in bed all day sleeping off that headache that won’t crack or the stomach ache that never seems to subside. Well have no fear, your holiday hangover cure is here!! That’s right. I have found some tidbits that will surely help you rid you dreadful symptoms. Enjoy! …and bottoms up!

  1. Gatorade/Vitamin Water/Coconut Water – Low blood sugar paired with dehydration accounts for most of those nasty hangover symptoms (think headache, shakiness and thirst), so a beverage enhanced with vitamins, sugar and electrolytes are your best bet for a quick rebound. Meanwhile, if you’ve got an exceptionally wicked hangover, just go straight for the Pedialyte.
  2. Spa Day – If your hangover is mild to moderate, a massage might be just the thing to release toxins, ease achy muscles and relax an overworked nervous system. Afterward, spend some time in the steam room to sweat out any leftover toxins. Just make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day so you don’t get dehydrated. *Note: If your hangover has you feeling truly terrible, it’s best to skip the massage, since releasing any more toxins into your bloodstream can actually make you feel worse.
  3. Bitters and soda water – If nausea is your biggest hangover issue, this old-fashioned remedy is a well-known standby for quick stomach relief. Angostura Bitters was initially created nearly 200 years ago as a stomach medicine, but nowadays, it’s frequently used as a cocktail flavoring (or hangover remedy, whatever).
  4. Peppermint Tea – This warm, caffeine-free beverage helps hangovers in a number of ways. Peppermint is a well-known cure for headaches and migraines, and it also has anti-spasmodic properties, which can help alleviate stomach maladies. Not to mention, tea is mostly made of water, which is what you really need after a night of heavy drinking.

A Gal with a Gift

If I’ve ever known a gal with a gift, it is a particular sorority sister of mine. May I introduce to you, Miss Darcie Nicholson. Darcie is a student at Texas Christian University (go frogs!) and is one of those people you know will make an impact on the world. We all have those people in our lives. You know who I am talking about. They’re the ones that step outside the boundaries, define who they are by the person they are and not the people around them, they are the leaders —not the followers. People want to be them. It’s a serious skill and Darcie continues to share this skill by shedding light on issues happening all around the world with her humble missions. Right now she is on a mission to make a difference and serve in various countries over the course of 11 months.

Darcie just recently started a project called Go Rings. These rings are awesome, but really… and I am not just saying this. They are beautiful and they help support a wonderful cause! See I  told you… she’s skilled. On Darcie’s Etsy site (where you can buy the rings for $15!! Yep, you read that correctly.. only $15!!) she explains her story in detail. The rings have 11 loops representing the 11 countries that will be reached. Each ring is bound 7 times, representing the 7 team members Darcie will be serving and traveling with.

When talking with Darcie about her mission I had one question for her: Why do you want to do this? What’s the point?
Her  reply: “Ok so — when I got around to thinking about what I’d like to do after college, I knew that I didn’t want to go into the workforce right away… I’ve got the rest of my life to do that. I wanted to continue learning, but not in a classroom.

I studied abroad last semester in Seville, Spain and definitely caught a case of wanderlust. I saw so many different cultures and ways of life, and realized there are parts of the world that I would just probably never see. I developed a passion for culture and knew I had to pursue it somehow.

I have a passion for ministry, too. Whether it’s been through Young Life, working at camp or serving through my church – my faith is an unshakable part of my daily life.

When I stumbled across the World Race’s website last year, I thought it sounded incredible. It combines my passion for culture and for ministry into a journey that benefits others as well as myself. How perfect! I applied on a whim about two months ago, and am excited to embark on this adventure.

When it comes down to it, the point is Jesus. That’s the whole point of the trip. Spreading the Gospel to places that may have never heard it. I intend to share the love of Christ for the rest of my life, but this concentrated period of 11 months is a short time that I can focus on that mission without distraction and “the American dream” getting in the way.”

“The World Race is an 11-month journey to 11 countries. Racers go with a mission-minded spirit to serve “the least of these” (Matt. 25:40). I leave in July to work and serve in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, The Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya.

The inspiration for Go Rings is Matthew 28:19 which says: “…therefore GO and make disciples of all nations.” So that’s what I intend to do!

To go on this journey, I have to raise $15,500. That’s 1,000 rings! I’m asking your help to send me out. My prayer is that you can share my mission with others through this ring. Help spread the word so that I can help spread The Word!”

Tasteful Advice: The Happiness Project

Has anyone read The Happiness Project? My best friend recommended that I read it because she knew it was something I would immediately dive into with full force. Clearly she is aware of my reading habits, as discussed in in last week’s post. Well, I started reading it on the way back from Atlanta and within one chapter it already had me thinking.

The Happiness Project is about a New Yorker who despite her fortunate life, wonderful husband, two beautiful daughters, and  a published writer amongst other things, she found herself to not be as happy as she thought she could be. There was potential for more. It wasn’t that she was unhappy, she’s just thought she could be more happy. She knew she had a amazing life but when she took a step back from everything she found herself not appreciating all the blessings in her life. The woman decides to set out on a journey to create a happiness project. A twelve-month-long project that is devoted to making her more happy. However, as much as this decision was made on a whim, after the fact there was much research. She had read a number of books from authors like Henry David Thoreau and biographies of Benjamin Franklin in addition to books on psychology and philosophy. She looked into several options and did extensive research. After all, everything important we know about happiness has already been discovered and documented by the great men that have come before us. She took a part of her newly developed project from a biography on Benjamin Franklin. His theory for happiness was to create a chart of twelve things that he could improve in his life that would make him happier. The key is to focus on each task every day. The author of “The Happiness Project,” Gretchen Rubin, decided that she would take the twelve aspects and apply them to each month in one year. Each month focuses on one aspect and then the next month adds another task that she felt needed attention. By the end of the year she will have accumulated twelve aspects that will provide her, hopefully, with a closer grasp on happiness.

Sounds like a good plan, right?! I mean who wouldn’t want to be happier. This whole theory really got me to thinking on the plane ride on Friday. I have found myself at a similar point in my life. It’s not a matter of being unhappy. I love my life and am so fortunate to live the life I lead. I am blessed beyond words. However, I feel that I could be even happier. I have so many things to be thankful for but at the same time i feel like i don’t appreciate them to their full capacity. Not to mention, i feel like my life is flying by and i haven’t taken the time to truly live it. I am twenty-two but somehow feel so young and so old all at the same time. Am I alone on this? Maybe you need to read the book to understand it?

I started to think about what my twelve things to focus on would be on over a year long happiness project. Yes, I’ve asked myself multiple questions about this. One major question being: can I even do it? Do I want to do it? I mean, who are we kidding. I am A.D.D. and go through phases all the time. Is this just another phase? What will my friends and family think? Will my boyfriend think I’m crazy for doing this? How will I define success- if I am happy at the end? Or if I am happier on daily basis? And the inevitable…what if it doesn’t work?

As I sat on the plane I thought about all the questions before enduring on a happiness project and I turned to my iPod for inspiration. I immediately knew what song to turn on repeat: “Home” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes. It’s a “happy place song” for me. Maybe because home is a such a happy place for me. Although, this got me to thinking, as well. Over the years my “home” has changed quite a bit. Up until five years ago home was Boston, MA. But now, whether my mother wants to accept this or not, my home is in Texas. When traveling, people ask me where I am from. Lately, I have found myself saying Texas. And not just with a casual reply, I am talking with such pride you wouldn’t’ believe. Now, to clarify… if people ask me if I am originally from Texas or where I grew up, I obviously say Massachusetts. I know this sounds weird but freshman year of college whenever I was asked where I was from, I replied, “Boston.” This was either followed by one of two things: 1. If in a bar, “oh you’re from Austin! Awesome, what high school did you go to?” Or 2. Boston, what the heck are you doing here? (As if people from other states weren’t allowed in Texas). Regardless, I said Boston and corrected every single person that ever thought I was from Austin. I was so incredibly proud to be from Boston. After all, I was the only person I knew from Boston at TCU. Not going to lie, I felt pretty freaking unique to say the least. Now, my home is in Texas and I couldn’t be more excited to say this is where I live. I am proud to be an official Texan now! I was just recently told by someone that I had a Texas accent. This made my day! How could it not? I finally belonged. For the last five years I have been in a place that I always seemed to fit into and now the feelings are mutual.

So what does this and my plane ride thought process have to do with my potential happiness project? Maybe nothing. But it has helped to clarify and remind me of a few things:

– Home is truly where the heart is
– You can in fact have more than one home
– My family will always be my number one priority
– Contrary to my initial thoughts, Texans do not go to school on horses
– Accidents happen and people make mistakes
– Don’t be afraid to fall in love with as many things as possible
– Be kind to everyone
– Don’t think about the “what ifs” as much
– Never lose your sense of faith
– Dogs are the best healers
– Money doesn’t buy happiness
– Don’t be afraid to fail
– You are the only one who can measure your personal success
– Let it go. Just let it go.
– Love conquers all.
– Always believe that the best is yet to come

With that being said, if I was to start a happiness project I think I know the twelve things I would focus on.

1. God- have faith and create a stronger relationship with God.
2. Family- always the number one priority- keep it that way
3. Love- work each day to make this a better relationship and more amazing than it already is. Learn new things about him and love him more each day
4. Friends- make an effort to spend more time with friends
5. Mindfulness- learn to be mindful of not only others but also, myself. One of the most important relationships is the one you have with yourself
6. Patience- a flaw that I know I need to work on. Be patient and kind. Apparently it’s a virtue…
7. Work- be happy where I work. It’s something I do every day. I deserve to like what I am doing
8. Contribution- give back to others
9. Financial organization- I want to be more aware of the money I’m spending and the money I’m saving. Being financially- savvy never hurt anyone
10. Self-educate- there is always more to be learned
11. Explore- see what the world has to offer. Explore new options, hobbies, interests, destinations, recipes and whatever else I want
12. Willingness- be willing to try new things. Be willing to fail. Be willing to be spontaneous. Be willing… To try.
